Background

Global Green USA is the U.S. affiliate of Green Cross International, the environmental movement founded by President Mikhail Gorbachev more than a decade ago. Global Green’s mission is to address President Gorbachev’s call to reconnect humanity to the environment by addressing the three greatest challenges facing the world today: global climate change, weapons of mass destruction, and clean water.

The San Francisco Committee

Global Green depends on the support and involvement of conscientious, progressive individuals to achieve its goals and to forward President Gorbachev’s vision of a safer, more sustainable planet. In response to the massive challenge issued by the President, we have established the San Francisco Committee. As we move our organization into its second decade, we understand the urgent need for knowledgeable and dedicated leadership who are active in the environmental community.

Global Green in the Bay Area & California

Enthusiasm for the environment, and for Global Green’s work in particular, in San Francisco and the Bay Area is extraordinary. Many of Global Green’s successes in green building, both in policy and in built examples, have come in the Bay Area. In 2002, Global Green received a large grant from the Packard Foundation to launch our Greater Bay Area Greening Affordable Housing Initiative which allowed us to be instrumental in influencing the state’s tax credit code to include $50 million worth of tax credit financing for green building of affordable housing. Global Green also:

  • Advises the San Francisco Mayor’s Office on Housing on green building issues;
  • Authored the Alameda County Green Building Guidelines; and
  • Provides technical assistance to non-profit housing developers with the support of the San Francisco Foundation.

In addition to green building, Global Green held a press conference and reception at the new Clift Hotel in San Francisco on March 22, 2005, UN World Water Day, to unveil a new short video by Global Green board member, Leonardo DiCaprio. This event supported our campaign to collect 20 million signatures on a petition to demand that the UN recognize access to clean water as a basic human right. On June 4, 2005, Global Green was the beneficiary organization of an eco fashion show held to celebrate the 60th anniversary of UN World Environment Day. Vice President Al Gore and others were on hand to listen to Global Green President Matt Petersen speak about the organization and the menacing threat of global warming.
