The U.S. uses more than one-quarter of the world's energy resources creating more than 25% of the CO2 pollution that causes global warming.

Stemming Climate Change:

  • Increasing the viability of solar and renewable energy production including $150 million for solar in LA while advocating for the transformation of energy use in our buildings.
  • Created Smart Climate Solutions for Communities, an initiative to ensure that urban and low-income families benefit from investments in climate reductions and ultimately support policies that reduce climate emissions.
  • Launched Hollywood Climate Action Initiative at the Inaugural meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative. Supporters include Leonardo DiCaprio, Salma Hayek, Charlize Theron, Orlando Bloom, Edward Norton, and Roland Emmerich.

The construction and maintenance of buildings are responsible for 40% of energy use in the U.S. and result in disproportionately higher utility bills for low-income families.

Creating Green Cities and Buildings:

  • Secured commitments to apply green building standards to nearly $20 billion in new construction for public buildings in California alone.
  • Providing key technical and policy support for greening the LA School District, now undergoing $14 billion in new school construction-the largest in the country.
  • Created The Greening Affordable Housing Initiative, lowering energy bills for low-income families and helping developers plan and build over 600 new healthy green housing units.
  • Opened the Green Building Resource Center in Santa Monica, California, one of the only U.S. centers

Over 65,000 tons of deadly chemical weapons await destruction in Russia and the U.S.

Eliminating Weapons of Mass Destruction:

  • Facilitating the safe and environmentally-sound destruction of over 70,000 tons of deadly chemical weapons in the U.S. and Russia.
  • Protecting $1 billion in annual U.S. funding for securing and eliminating nuclear, chemical and biological weapons in the former Soviet Union.
  • Opened and managed the only public information and community support offices in the countries of the former Soviet Union burdened by dangerous weapons stockpile legacies of the Cold War.

Over 2 million children die each year from illnesses associated with a lack of clean drinking water.

Providing Clean, Safe Drinking Water:

  • Promoting an International World Water Treaty to ensure that access to fresh water is a human right.
  • Co-produced short film Water Planet with board member Leonardo DiCaprio and launched it on World Water Day, reaching tens of millions of people around the world.
  • Hosted symposia on critical waterrelated issues such as international fresh water conflict prevention and resolution.
  • Creating clean water projects in developing countries including parts of Bolivia and villages of Swaziland.
