Creating Sustainable Neighborhoods: LEED ND Assessment Program

We are offering no-cost sustainable neighborhood design technical assistance to a select number of U.S. communities, using the LEED for Neighborhood Development standard, which provides a nationally recognized method for creating neighborhoods that are walkable, bikeable, resource-efficient, and equitable. This free assistance is being provided under a grant to Global Green USA from the U.S. EPA's Office of Sustainable Communities. PDF of Report

Lakewood, Colorado: Sustainable Neighborhood Technical Assistance

As part of our grant from the US EPA's Office of Sustainable Communities Building Blocks for Sustainable Communities Program, a team of technical experts lead by Global Green headed to Lakewood, Colorado to assess the sustainability of an emerging Arts District near the newly constructed Lamar light rail station. The team uses the nationally recognized rating system, LEED for Neighborhood Development, as the baseline for assessing existing conditions and city policies to determine what actions could enhance the neighborhood's overall sustainability. West Dearborn Downtown: Sustainable Neighborhood Technical Assistance

As part of our grant from the US EPA's Office of Sustainable Communities Building Blocks for Sustainable Communities Program, a team of technical experts lead by Global Green headed to Dearborn, Michigan to assess the sustainability of West Downtown Dearborn, anchored by the planned Intermodal transit station. The team uses the nationally recognized rating system, LEED for Neighborhood Development, as the baseline for assessing existing conditions and city policies to determine what actions could catalyze Transit Oriented Development around the upcoming transit station. Lafayette, Indiana: Sustainable Neighborhood Technical Assistance

As part of our grant from the US EPA's Office of Sustainable Communities Building Blocks for Sustainable Communities Program, a team of technical experts lead by Global Green headed to Lafayette, Indiana to assess the sustainability of the Historic Centennial neighborhood. The team uses the nationally recognized rating system, LEED for Neighborhood Development, as the baseline for assessing existing conditions and city policies to determine what actions could enhance the neighborhood's overall sustainability and the neighborhood's commitment to creating a walkable, bikable, and resource-efficient development that maintains its historic character. Eden Prairie, MN: Sustainable Neighborhood Technical Assistance

As part of our grant from the US EPA's Office of Sustainable Communities Building Blocks for Sustainable Communities Program, a team of technical experts lead by Global Green USA headed to Eden Prairie, Minnesota for a neighborhood assessment. Our recommendations focus on the new light rail station coming to the Golden Triangle Area (GTA), the city's largest employment center, which provides an incredible opportunity to get a somewhat captive audience to ride the train. Green Urbanism Leaders Summit Summary

On February 12-13, 2009, Global Green gathered a group of urban and environmental thinkers & doers for two days of discussion on the topic of green urbanism. The goal was to clarify this concept and also to arrive at some degree of agreement on the main principles of green urbanism, especially how to put these ideas into action. Also of importance was to expand the community of people that felt either an affinity to the subject. Out of the summit, the common direction was clear: our ability to rise to this challenge is a function of whether we change how we see our place in the world. Released June 2009. PDF of Report

Green Buildings - A Tool for Stemming Climate Change?

This publication talks about the six-step methodology Global Green has developed a for establishing a green building program. Functioning as an umbrella, a green building program integrates and encourages innovation in waste management, stormwater, water conservation, energy efficiency, land use, and public health. Pioneers like Santa Monica laid the foundation for folding green building into local government operations by focusing first on City building projects. This trend continued through the first part of the new millennium, with Southland cities large and small adopting green requirements for public construction. PDF of Report

Case Study: Andrew H. Wilson Elementary School

Andrew H. Wilson Elementary School is a model high performance school for the New Orleans Recovery School District’s $1.8 billion school construction program. Andrew H. Wilson is a kindergarden through 8th grande school for approx. 540 students. The campus includes: 26 classrooms, a cafeteria, a gymnasium, an art studio, a music room, a computer lab, a library, and administration facilities. The school features an environmentally friendly site design, and was designed to meet LEED for Schools 2007 standards and is anticipated to achieve LEED for Schools Gold certification by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). Case Study: Green Dot Charter Schools

Green Dot Charter Schools, in partnership with Pacific Charter School Development (PCSD), opened the doors of Animo Ralph Bunche and Animo Justice High School’s permanent facility in September 2008. Providing over one thousand new seats for students in South Los Angeles, the schools transformed two former industrial spaces into a 77,173 square foot Leed Certified educational campus. Now operating as Animo Ralph Bunche and Animo Jefferson Middle School, the schools are examples of a green approach to planning, design and operations in an urban setting ripe for adaptive reuse. Developing Green Building Programs: A Step-By-Step Guide for Local Governments

Global Green USA's step-by-step guidebook outlining a six-step process that local agencies can utilize to develop their own green building programs. The process was developed based on the real world experience that Global Green has gained in working with local governments to develop green building programs in cities such as, San Francisco, Santa Monica, Pasadena, Irvine, West Hollywood, and New Orleans. Green Building Developer Fact Sheets

As part of Global Green's Greening the Tax Credits Campaign, an effort to encourage various states around the country to adopt sustainable building practices as part of the state-administered federal low-income housing tax credit program, we recently published Green Building Developer Fact Sheets, which highlight various sustainable building practices and provide information about local product availability and cost. The first set of fact sheets is for Louisiana, the second set for NY State. PDF of Report
