"Some of the fabrics I use are made with fibers from pineapple and water lily plants," said designer Oliver Tolentino, backstage before Global Green's 7th Annual Gorgeous & Green event in San Francisco. The Los Angeles-based designer showed several dresses in the event's eco fashion show, and also dressed the event co-chair, Nadine Weil.
His innovative use of alternative fabrics is one of the distinguishing characteristics of his line and he says it came from simply seeking the best fabrics. "I'm from the Philippines and we use what we have." His fabrics are also more porous and require less dye to achieve the vibrant colors. Backstage, the young models were equally impressed, as they dressed for the show. "Isn't it cool?" asked one, twirling in her dress.
