To tackle tough global environmental problems like climate change, we need global cooperation, strong national leadership, and inspired local innovation. To date, this local innovation has largely been seen in the form of cities and states putting in place legislation and incentives. This, for example, has helped give birth to the rapidly growing clean energy economy in places like California.
How do we encourage President Obama to show national leadership while engaging in global cooperation? How can we inspire and celebrate local innovation that unleashes the creativity and entrepreneurship of citizens across the country?
You can do something on both fronts:
- Call on President Obama to attend the UN Conference on Sustainable Development -- Rio+20 meeting -- the most important environmental meeting in a decade, and come with a plan for global action on the environment.
- Nominate a local green hero -- or as I like to say, a citizen entrepreneur -- who is making a difference in their community and making better a corner of their world. The winner wil get $1,000 to advance their project, and earn the chance to join me on the Global Green delegation to the Rio meeting.
Without a healthy environment, we simply cannot thrive, let alone survive, on this planet. We urge you to join us to call on President Obama to join other world leaders at the historic "Rio+20" summit.
In our communities, we each encounter local green heroes who are making a difference to green their own corners of the world. We need you to share with us your local green heroes through our just-launched Citizen Entrepreneur Contest.
I hope you will help us in our efforts to guarantee a better future for this and future generations. Please join us in urging President Obama to attend the Earth Summit by signing our letter -- and nominating a local green hero for our Citizen Entrepreneur Contest.
