Our New Orleans office held its monthly workshop last night with the AIA, New Orleans Chapter and the USGBC, LA Chapter. The room was packed for "Upgrading Your Home Wisely: Hiring a Green Contractor You Can Trust."
Guest panelists included Anitra McKay of Construction Specialist Group, David Weathersby of Brotherhood Way, Mike Bowen of The Weatherization Group, and Wayne Erdman of Riverview Solar.
The discussion for homeowners and contractors began with how to get involved with our NOLA Wise Program, the benefits of weatherization, and how choosing the right contractor can make all the difference in protecting the integrity of historic New Orleans homes.
The hot topic of the night:
The BPI certification and the NOLA Wise contractor vetting process. Training in building science allows for a whole house approach to weatherization/upgrading/renovation and makes NOLA Wise contractors more attractive and qualified.
Good points raised:
FIRST (Find, Inquire, Recommend, Solve, Thank): The basic process used by some of our contractors when looking at a weatherization project. This was explained to the group by Anitra McKay of Construction Specialist Group.
Weatherization does not violate local historic districts codes in New Orleans.
There are many ways to weatherize without changing the appearance of the home and ways to work with the Historic Districts Landmarks Commission (HDLC) for approval of other measures.
