West Coast, prepare yourself for an injection of Louisiana flavor. The Global Green and the Voice of the Wetlands All-Stars 2011 tour is headed your way soon. Featuring some of the bayou’s biggest stars, the tour will raise awareness and support for restoring Louisiana’s wetlands. And though I lack any musical talent whatsoever, I will be tagging along and providing the audience with everything they need to make a difference in the wetlands’ future.
The wetlands are the heart and soul of southern Louisiana, providing land and livelihood both. But they face a grave threat. Louisiana’s wetlands account for more than 80 percent of the country’s coastal land loss, disappearing at an unprecedented rate. As the wetlands are increasingly cut off from much of the sediment and nutrients necessary to replenish them, America is losing one of its most valuable natural and cultural resources.
Started in 2004 by musician Tab Benoit, Voice of the Wetlands is an organization dedicated to educating the public about the value of Louisiana’s wetlands and how we can protect them. The Voice of the Wetlands All-Stars are Tab Benoit, Cyril Neville, Anders Osbourne, Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, Johnny Vidacovich, Jumpin’ Johnny Sansone, and Waylon Thibodeaux.
If you want to learn more about the wetlands and our efforts to save them, or if you just want to hear some amazing live music, come out and see one of the All-Stars shows. The tour begins Feb. 3, in Boulder, CO, and travels west from there. I will be joining the All-Stars in San Diego on Feb. 7, to blog and tweet all of our adventures from the road, so expect some great behind-the-scenes moments.
