Director of Development

We are looking for a highly motivated, experienced Director of Development to both manage and participate actively in the daily implementation of a comprehensive fundraising program and achieve quarterly goals through expanding on-going programs and initiating new approaches. Candidates should be tune in with cause related marketing strategies and have high energy with 5-7 years of special event, major gift and volunteer/staff management experience at the executive level. You’ll need to contribute to a fast paced environment requiring strategic thinking and a hands-on commitment. This opportunity will be both professionally and personally rewarding.

Major Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Hold Development staff accountable and manage day-to-day department operations.
  • Manage Events Manager, staff and consultants, as well as collaborate with Communications Director, to oversee, plan and execute two annual dinners (LA and NY), annual pre-Oscar Party, annual SF party, and other fundraising and cultivation events.
  • Responsible for raising the budgeted gross and keeping expenses in line with mutually agreed budget.
  • Work with President and CEO/Asst to President to maximize fundraising efforts with the Board of Directors and Council of Advisors
  • Manage and/or oversee prospecting and researching new sources of funding, including corporate, foundation, and individual donors.
  • Support and oversee capital campaign for Holy Cross Project and other special projects
  • Oversee foundation and corporate prospecting, proposal, and existing donor management process with staff with goal to increase general operating support significantly.
  • Oversee, coordinate and/or follow-up related to grants, including narrative and financial reporting as well as meeting the budgeted goals for each donor type.
  • Ensuring the calendar of grants and gift reporting are managed in a timely basis.
  • Oversee and/or lead Major Donor Prospecting/Solicitations/Servicing program and ensuring that the major gifts officer is meeting and beating established goals.
  • Manage regional committees in SF, LA, NYC, and New Orleans – with current coordination by assistant to the President – who raise additional unrestricted support through direct giving and/or existing events through regular and frequent communications and quarterly in-person updates (by President, development and/or program staff). 
  • Maintain direct contact – personally and/or via President, board or key staff - with all donors of $1000 or more at least two to three times a year (including annual ask) and initiate process for contact/relationship management for all donors over $500.
  • Strategically grow and maintain a limited but growing on-line and limited direct mail membership program.
  • With Director of Communications and other staff, explore how to prospect small gifts and other revenue through the Resource Centers and other avenues.
  • Manage the database (Raiser’s Edge and Convio) and ensure it is efficiently managed and maximized as a fundraising, membership, communications and e-activism tool. 
  • Ensure donor follow up (i.e., acknowledgement letters and emails, database entries) is current and that the database is managed per the Database plan (to be developed).
  • Prepare and manage the annual development budgets and work plan.
  • Track and manage all Development program budgets and ensuring goals are met.

  • Database experience required, Raiser’s Edge strongly preferred, as well as Convio
