Federal, City and Non-profit Partnership Helps Homeowners Make Green Retrofits
Federal Investment Will Create Local Jobs
NEW ORLEANS, LA -- Today, Mayor Mitch Landrieu launched a program dedicated to helping homeowners improve the energy efficiency of their homes, another step in the burgeoning green movement in New Orleans. NOLA Wise provides comprehensive services for residents of New Orleans to help them save energy and money. The program will also create jobs for local contractors and help train workers in green retrofitting.
"NOLA Wise is part of a larger green movement we are leading in New Orleans," said Mayor Mitch Landrieu, who formally launched the program today. "And it's more than just helping residents who want to make environmentally friendly decisions. This is about employing and training local contractors in green retrofitting. This federal investment is leveraging private sector and non-profit sector support to generate energy savings for our residents and to create jobs in our local economy."
NOLA Wise helps homeowners navigate the home improvement process from start to finish. After completing an initial home examination to determine how much energy is being wasted, homeowners are provided with an inventory of suggested improvements, and help, if needed, in obtaining incentives and loans to make the changes. In addition, NOLA Wise also provides specially trained and certified contractors to do the improvements and monitor their work for quality.
The nonprofit Global Green is managing the NOLA Wise program with the help of a team of non-profits, and the guidance of the Southeast Energy Efficiency Alliance (SEEA), a non-profit based in Atlanta charged by the U. S. Department of Energy with unifying state-based home energy saving programs.
"Fidelity Homestead Savings Bank is proud to serve as the Program Financial Partner for NOLA Wise. The exclusive loan product we are offering allows the widest possible range of homeowners to invest in making their houses more energy efficient," said Alton McRee, CEO of Fidelity Homestead Savings Bank, the program’s official financial institution.
"NOLA Wise offers to New Orleans residents a one stop shop for how to make their homes more comfortable and efficient,” said Elizabeth Galante, the director of Global Green USA's New Orleans office. "We help participants every step along the way, so homeowners know they are getting high quality work for the best price. We have found that many people consider green retrofits for a long time before making any improvements because the process can seem daunting. With NOLA Wise available to guide homeowners, they will be more inclined to invest in making their homes energy efficient."
In addition to energy efficiency, NOLA Wise is focused on workforce development and creating green jobs in New Orleans. As part of the program, 17 New Orleans contractors have already earned Building Performance Institute Certification after receiving training on nationally-recognized methods for making homes more energy efficient. The Department of Energy provided scholarships for the training, in conjunction with Global Green USA, the City of New Orleans, Southeast Energy Efficiency Alliance, Green Coast Enterprises, and CORE USA.
"NOLA Wise and its 15 sister programs across the southeast provides a test lab to develop replicable programs that promote energy efficiency while helping to strengthen the local economy by stimulating job growth in the region," said Michael Mills, President of the Southeast Energy Efficiency Alliance.
