This week Starbucks Coffee Company, with Action Carting Environmental Services Inc., launched a paper cup recycling pilot program at 86 of its New York City stores. The pilot leverages a recycling model developed through Global Green’s Coalition for Resource Recovery, of which Starbucks and Action Carting are members.

New York, NY, Sept. 22, 2009 - Global USA’s Coalition for Resource Recovery announced a key milestone today in its goal of achieving 100% recyclable wholesale packaging through Hunt’s Point Distribution Center, the largest food distribution center in the world. Mountaire Farms, the sixth largest poultry company, and Interstate Container, in partnership with Global Green, commenced the conversion of Mountaire’s New York City business and its Lumberbridge, NC facility - the largest poultry processing plant in the U.S. - to FBA-certified recyclable and compostable boxes supplied by Interstate Container.
Global Green USA’s Coalition for Resource Recovery Launches Foodservice Recycling Pilot at Seven Starbucks Stores in Manhattan
New York City, September 10, 2009 - Global Green USA’s Coalition for Resource Recovery today announced the launch of its recycling program at seven Starbucks stores in Manhattan. The pilot will test the collection and recycling of coffee cups when combined with old corrugated cardboard (OCC), the most extensively recycled material in the United States. The objective of this program is to develop a cost effective mechanism to close the loop on paper packaging, reducing greenhouse gases and assisting municipalities in reaching their solid waste diversion goals.

New Report: Strong Energy Efficiency Policies in Energy/Climate Legislation Would Save California Families $209 per Year, Create 66,200 Jobs
Los Angeles, CA, September 9, 2009 - New national report finds that California households would save an average of $209 per year and 66,200 sustainable jobs would be created in the state over the next ten years if Congress acts now to include strong energy efficiency improvements in energy and climate legislation. The report, entitled Energy Efficiency in the American Clean Energy Security Act of 2009: Impacts of Current Provisions and Opportunities to Enhance the Legislation, was released by Environment California and the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy. The efficiency provisions would prevent 30 million metric tons of global warming emissions; this is the equivalent of removing the pollution from over 5 million cars from the road for a year.

LARGEST RECYCLABLE WHOLESALE TRANSFER PACKAGING INITIATIVE IN U.S. TO COMMENCE AT WORLD’S LARGEST FOOD DISTRIBUTION CENTER
March 1, 2009 – New York, NY – Global Green USA announced today its plan to substitute all non-recyclable transfer packaging distributed from Hunt’s Point Distribution Center, the largest food distribution center in the world, with recyclable packaging. If successful, the program would divert 30,000 tons/yr of corrugated from the landfill and would reduce greenhouse gases by 103,000mtCO2e/yr, equivalent to taking 19,000 cars off the road, and would set the standard for greening transfer packaging throughout the world.

Global Warning from Antarctica: Melting Ice Shelves Impact Us All, Not Just March of Penguins
Los Angeles, February 16, 2006 - A multi-national expedition of scientific experts, researchers and photographers has brought back unique images from remote Antarctica, illustrating the melting ice shelf. To send a 'global warning' to the world about the threats posed by climate change and to encourage smart solutions (i.e., renewable energy, conservation, fuel efficiency), the group also sent a photo of themselves assembled on a stark white iceberg to form a large "human SOS." The message calls attention to the imminent danger caused by warming trends to Antarctica and the melting sea ice, not just to penguins in Antarctica but to all of humanity due to the resulting rising sea levels.
