How-To: Planning Oscar Week’s Glamorous, Green Event
Global Green USA’s Pre-Oscar Party is a platform for bringing together powerful voices and passionate supporters. The night is dedicated to celebrating smart climate solutions and acknowledging the power of our projects to make a difference. It’s also a great opportunity to showcase the details that go into creating a glamorous—and green—event.
Here’s the inside scoop on planning a more sustainable soirée:
Choose natural, organic, and/or reusable centerpieces and table arrangements.
This year, we’re minimizing disposable decorations by employing a sleek, modern aesthetic. Rather than using cut flowers and printed posters, we’re opting for simple glass centerpieces, colored mood lighting, and electronic projection displays.
Serve organic, sustainable food. Whenever possible, use produce from local farmers and merchants. Extra step: Go meatless!
Akasha Richmond, the talented Culver City chef, developed an entirely plant-based menu for our Patron Dinner—substantially reducing the water use and carbon footprint of our meal. Akasha sources the best organic and local ingredients, creating a unique farm-to-table experience.
Pour environmentally responsible spirits and wine; opt for naturally flavored soft drinks and organic juices; choose reusable glassware.
The bar will be stocked with eco-friendly 360 Vodka and responsibly produced Defiant Whisky. During the Patron Dinner, we’ll be pouring Certified California Sustainable J. Lohr wines from a unique vineyard that employs cutting-edge sustainability practices including soil moisture sensors and a three-acre solar tracking system.
For those looking for something softer, we’ll have local, organic cold-pressed juices from Clover Juice available at the bar.
Encourage public transportation, carpooling, or travel in hybrid, electric, and other green vehicles.
Global Green USA’s Pre-Oscar Party was inspired, in part, by our “Red Carpet, Green Cars” campaign designed to highlight the benefits of driving alternative fuel vehicles. In 2003, Academy Award nominees like Leonardo DiCaprio and others drove to the Oscars in these cars helping to create a global market for them. 11 years later, we’ve continued this campaign by chauffeuring our celebrity guests in green vehicles to and from the event.
In addition, the all-new 2014 Cadillac ELR plug-in electric vehicle will be on display in the Caddy ELR lounge and on the green carpet, accessible to media and VIP guests.
Share your event invitation via email and social media; make use of tablets and other available screens for displays.
We’ve gone paperless! As in years past, our event invitation and ticketing are beautifully designed to live online. New in 2014, Samsung and Sprint have helped us go paper-free at the event by providing Galaxy Tab 3 tablets for each of our Patron Dinner tables. The tablets will house the dinner menu, sponsor overviews, Global Green USA project and program information, and other interactive features.
Amplify your message with artists who support your mission.
We’re thrilled feature musical performers who can rock a room—and a movement. Renown artist and environmentalist Moby will headline the event, along with a set by The Crystal Method, an eco-conscious duo who have made strides in their industry as part of the Electronic Music Alliance (EMA) for social responsibility, environmental stewardship, community building, and volunteerism.
Educate guests and make it easy to separate waste; recycle and compost.
Global Green USA's 11th Annual Pre-Oscar Party will be a Zero Waste Event! Our own Coalition for Resource Recovery (CoRR), in collaboration with CoRR member Athens Services and the staff of the Avalon Hollywood, will work to ensure that at least 90% of all refuse, including food scraps and packaging, is diverted from landfill through three key measures: reusing, recycling, and composting. In addition, the CoRR team will track and report on the step-by-step process by which the wastes are collected at the glamorous party and transformed into valuable products.
Stay tuned for updates and reports from the team!
