Keystone Pipeline: Our Comment to the State Department
In his state of the Union Address, President Obama said, “But the debate is settled. Climate change is a fact. And when our children’s children look us in the eye and ask if we did all we could to leave them a safer, more stable world, with new sources of energy, I want us to be able to say yes, we did.” Approving Keystone XL would directly break that promise. The State Department itself acknowledged that the science is clear: Keystone XL will have the carbon pollution equivalent of adding up to 5.7 million cars to the road, severely worsening carbon pollution. An 830,000 barrel per day pipeline will lead to an ongoing cycle of refining and burning tar sands that would wreck havoc on the environment.
As an environmental non-profit organization dedicated to fostering a global value shift towards a sustainable and secure future, Global Green USA knows that there are other ways. Scientists, including Professor Marc Z. Jacobson of Stanford University, have outlined ways to power the United States – and even the entire planet – on 100% renewable energy without have to resort to dirty and dangerous options like fracking and natural gas.
Approving Keystone will be a step backwards from where our country needs to be going, and where you pledged to lead us. This decision will draw a clear line in the sand for whether or not America will lead on clean energy, and whether we as a country will be on the right side of history. Please do the right thing, for our children’s children, and reject Keystone XL.
